For guitars, this failing could be due to bad frets, noisy pots, flaky jack, frozen trussrod, shorted or open pickups, bad switches, twisted neck, buzzing, hum, unstable intonation, collapsed bridge, leaning tailpiece, sticky nut, rusty or broken tuners, or an unstable neck (due to a break or loose joint). Especially watch out for high action.

New Jersey. Feb 13, 2012. #5. I think the affordable Fender guitars are way more playable than affordable Gibson guitars. Gibsons that are affordable usually have very pourous rosewood that feels very rough/gritty to play on. However there is one big issue with Fenders. The neck alignment.

To allow the strings to clear the top of the first fret, the bottoms of the slots should be .030" higher than the fret height. Use your feeler gauges to find the fret height by laying a straightedge across two frets and combining the gauges in a stack until they barely slide under the straightedge.

Epiphone makes its own version of the classic Les Paul, but they cost a whole lot less ( under $600 for a Classic or a Standard ). This is largely because they are manufactured overseas — in China, Korea and Indonesia. Epiphone Les Paul guitars are mostly indistinguishable from the Gibson version, from their look and feel to their sounds.

The binding I bought is a white plastic strip that measures .060" thick x .250" wide. Being stiff and relatively brittle, the first step is to shape it to the contours of the fretboard and then glue it in place. Shaping is done with heat and the recommended glue to attach it to the ebony fretboard is weld-on cement.

Feb 14, 2014. eastern Iowa. Acoustic guitars and basses are different from electrics. Saddles don't move, and there really is no way to adjust intonation. Very common issue on these is going sharp as you go up the board, simply caused by bending/stretching the string to fret it. If the action is higher, you get more bend, thus more sharpness.

Only the LTD bucks the trend with its ultra-skinny effort. Upper fret access on all four contenders is great thanks to the deep cutaways. Big frets equal easy string-bending. The flattish fingerboards help too from the Gibson-approved 305mm [12"] radius on the, er, Gibson and Guild to the even flatter 'Super Strat' feel of the LTD and Yamaha.

Once the fret is cut to size then I slap it into a vice and take out my favorite rotary tool. I used a grinding bit that is rated for metal. I grind down the tang of the fret to about 3/16 inch in from each end. This leaves room for the fret end to come to the edge of the neck binding while still allowing the tang to go down into the slot.

So, if you take your guitar in for intonation issues, don't be surprised if your tech examines the frets. The answer is some fret work — in many cases a fret-level and re-crowning but, sometimes, a refret. Either job should be followed by a good setup. The end result should be a guitar that plays as in-tune as a guitar possibly can.

Think about it this way: when you set string height (action) over the frets for optimal playability and tone, the fatter strings are farther from the frets than the skinnier strings. Which means the strings' arc has to be a larger radius than that of the tops of the frets. This fact is why I have no use for radius gauges when setting up a bridge.

The frets are silver in color now, the wax buildup is gone. After that I wiped down the bass with old english lemon oil and let it soak into everything for 20 minutes. Wiped it down, did same to Ibanez with natural walnut finish & maple neck. Both basses turned out really beautiful. The mother of pearl dots on the Gibson & frets are stunning.

Step 1: Remove the Frets First we need to take the old frets out. Take off you strings and lets get moving. I used a soldering iron to heat the metal fret. This melts the glue in the fret slot and starts to let the fret go. Some guitars will have glue... some won't. But if there is glue you will notice it starting to bubble up from under the fret.

You should be able to figure out if it's the frets or the finger board. Try bending the string without touching the fingerboard itself. Never had to smooth a rough fingerboard, although I've scraped a few with a razor blade to get rid of crud when doing a fret level/dress on a well loved guitar. Shouldn't be a problem on a new guitar though.

To do this our repairer measures the distance of the bass (6th, thickest) and treble (1st, thinnest) strings from the 12th fret. For a good, general purpose playing action that suits fingerpicking and strumming styles of playing, the 'action' at the 12th fret should be a little under 3mm* for the 6th string, and around 2mm for the 1st string.

For an acoustic guitar to work properly, it is very important that the gap between the strings and the frets (called the 'action') is set correctly. You can't fret clear notes if the 16th fret is closer to the strings than the 15th fret, so you have to keep the action high enough to run higher than parallel with the upper frets. Grind some fall away into those upper frets and you can then lower the action.
