If you hadn't sent the photos I'd have scratched my head a bit before trying to answer :-) But considering the fact that sand blasting or phosphate washing are not really ideal pre-treatments for aluminum, and that chromate conversion coating may not be practical, and then looking at this stunning project, my opinion is most certainly prime the components first :-)
