Perlite and vermiculite are both used to improve moisture retention and aeration in soil. They are used in a similar manner, but they are not interchangeable. Perlite and vermiculite are quite different in composition and in how they improve your soil. Determining which is better for use in your garden depends on your plants and their needs.

The volcanic glass, or perlite, is formed when lava (molten rock) spews out of a volcano, and cools in a rapid manner. Because of rapid cooling, water is trapped within the rock, and the lava forms into a glass-like structure. Perlite contains 2 to 5 percent water and is a silicate rock, meaning it contains a "high percentage of silica (Si),"

Vermiculite retains moisture while perlite does not. So, by using a 50-50 ratio mixture, it creates an ebb and flow type of system. A 50-50 mixture will hold some, but not all, of the water. It will retain some of the nutrients, supplying the roots with the food necessary to grow as well as plenty of oxygen.

Perlite Features & Uses. Perlite is derived from a mined silicon rock that has been crushed, heated, and expanded. They also contain other minerals like iron oxide, potassium oxide, and sodium oxide. Aug 23, 2021Perlite has pores inside which are filled with air - in fact, a large percentage of the material is made up of these air pockets. So this is one of the best materials to improve aeration. While vermiculite can improve aeration to a degree by breaking up the soil and allowing air to flow through, it is not as good at providing aeration as perlite.

A volcanic rock, perlite expands after crushing and baking. It is known to dilate four to twenty times in volume when heated. During dilation, perlite particles form white granules with tiny cavities or pores. The porous surface retains water needed for plant roots and forms air passages at the base of plants, thereby providing optimal aeration.

Perlite is volcanic rock transformed through a heating and crushing process into fine, white bits. It aids drainage and aeration as well as protecting roots against sudden changes in temperature. Vermiculite, which comes from a silicate rock similar to mica, also provides aeration and drainage. But it holds water and nutrients better than perlite.

Vermiculite is used to absorb moister and aeration but doesn't aerate/drain as much as perlite. I personally use vermiculite for sowing seeds. Yes it would suit succulents, I use sharp sand for drainage.
