Making crushed stone more expensive to use on sites that require pumping of concrete. Crushed stone is typically more expensive to produce due to the additional costs associated with the drilling, blasting, and crushing required to produce the various sizes of aggregate. 6. Crushed stone is preferable to natural gravel in asphaltic concrete.

Flaky (thickness is small, relative to the other two dimensions) and elongated (length is larger than other two dimensions) stones are the most difficult to screen. They pass over the screen deck laying on their widest side.

I can't even imagine that rock would compact. 1½ rock seems better than crushed rock to me, since I see no reason to have fines in the mix, it seems that large rock would provide better drainage, and allow the concrete to settle down in between the rock giving a stronger slab. Am I wrong? Comment PostCancel Guest #5 04-26-2003, 02:18 PM

Crushed aggregate is produced by crushing quarry rock, boulders, cobbles, or large-size gravel. Recycled concrete is a viable source of aggregate and has been satisfactorily used in granular subbases, soil-cement, and in new concrete. After harvesting, aggregate is processed: crushed, screened, and washed to obtain proper cleanliness and gradation.
